We track 70,365 Spotify playlists from independent curators. On July 18, 2026 we counted how many had actually been updated recently. The results should change how you build a pitch list:
- 12,229 playlists (17.4%) were updated in the last 90 days.
- 21,931 (31.2%) were updated within the last 12 months, including the 12,229 updated within 90 days.
- 48,434 (68.8%) haven’t been touched in over a year.
Put bluntly: more than two out of three playlists in our catalog met our operational definition of dormant: no update within the previous 12 months. If you pitch without checking freshness, most of your effort lands in graveyards.
Why so many playlists die
The catalog is highly fragmented: 28,473 of 37,048 curator records (77%) are associated with exactly one playlist, while 4,731 (about 13%) are associated with three or more. Playlist count alone does not identify a curator’s occupation or motivation. In our experience, single-playlist accounts are often personal projects, while multi-playlist accounts more often show regular publishing workflows; that is a platform observation, not something this count proves.
A dormant playlist isn’t worthless to its followers; old followers keep listening. It is a poor pitch target because a curator who is no longer updating it is unlikely to review or add new submissions, and an add that never happens has a conversion rate of zero.
The freshness hierarchy we use
Based on this data, here’s the practical hierarchy for pitch lists:
- Updated this month: the playlist is demonstrably being updated right now. These playlists deserve priority when genre fit and integrity signals also hold.
- Updated this quarter: active enough to pitch, especially if the fit is strong.
- Updated this year: borderline. Worth including only when fit is exceptional; expect slow or no response.
- Older than a year: skip. This is 68.8% of our catalog, and it will absorb unlimited pitching effort while returning nothing.
This is also why every matching feature we build filters on recency by default; our search and AI matcher only surface playlists updated within the last 12 months, weighted toward the last 90 days. When our MCP tools tell an AI agent “4,932 active matches”, the word active is doing real work: the dormant majority was already excluded before ranking.
How to check any playlist’s pulse in ten seconds
For a single playlist, open it in Spotify’s desktop interface and inspect the dates attached to recently added tracks. A spread of additions across recent weeks suggests ongoing activity, but it does not prove that a human is manually maintaining the playlist. For bulk checking, or to catch subtler problems than dormancy (like follower patterns that don’t match engagement), run it through the free playlist checker, which folds curator activity into a 0–100 integrity score.
What this means for your next release
The dormancy number sounds depressing, but flip it: filtering on freshness alone removes two-thirds of the noise before you’ve judged a single playlist on fit. Combine “updated in the last 90 days” with genuine genre fit and you’re choosing from a pool of thousands, not tens of thousands, which is exactly the size of problem a focused afternoon (or an AI agent doing the research pass) can solve.
